petra: A woman grinning broadly (Shirley - Good day)

While others write about love fair, love sleek
or fierce, or curvy-hipped, the lines I have
for my heart's dear are more prosaic, thus:
I knew that you would like the ebooks, dear.
I didn't know you'd read to me from them--
since I have read them many times, like you--
but when I could not bear to read or think
because my head was fit to split in half,
the only place in all the worlds to be
was listening to you read Chapter Two.
"Just start," I said, "just read me anything."
The words were solace like your warm embrace,
familiar in their oft-thumbed dialogue.

(But o, my love, I fear that you are wrong:
I'm sure that "Vor" does not receive the stress.
Not Vorpatril, how so? Vorkosigan,
we say alike, Vordarian the same.
At least we can agree on Bothari,
but now I want to know the Word of God
on this, though if I'm wrong I may not change.

If Moria is in the flicks, that's fine,
though how I cleave to the Moria false.
That's how my mother said it, so it's "right,"
as she in tones of love read me the books
when I was young or feeling less than spry.)

Awww, that is sweet and geeky. And yes, it's very hard to switch pronunciation in your head once it's settled and you're used to it.

This is lovely. :)

And it really is nearly impossible to change pronunciation once you're used to something, isn't it?

The first part is just so lovely and loving and the second is so true! I have had those conversations (for different words/names:)!

Awww, this is fun. And yes, a frequent problem in our household too. Fights have broken out over Ivan.

Yup, I've always said Ee-van because pronouncing it the Russian way makes sense in my head. But the official pronunciation guide appears to disagree!

Just don't - it makes more problems than it solves
It's nicer to just keep what's in your head
Having said that it is nice to be sure
